1. Estimating greensnap yield damage with canopy reflectance: a case study

Grain yield reduction caused by storm-induced plant breakage (green snap) occurs often in corn fields. With climate change and an increasing frequency in the occurrence of extreme weather events, it is essential to develop methods that can accurately estimate green snap damage, so growers can be properly compensated by insurance companies for yield loss.  Because plant breakage also affects crop canopy reflectance, this case study aimed to characterize the changes in crop canopy reflectance... 2. Application of precision agriculture technologies in grazing: example of goats browsing in forest rangelands of Northern Morocco

The aim of this study was to characterize patterns of grazing behavior of goats in a Mediterranean forest rangeland. We conducted a one-year study in the Chefchaouen region, Northern Morocco, during two contrasting seasons (spring and summer) using new technological tools. Eight goats were simultaneously fitted with GPS collars and sensors for 3 days during each season. A calibration study and classification tree analysis were used to predict other grazing activities of goats (eating, walking,... Y. Chebli, S. El otmani, M. Chentouf, J. Hornick, J. Cabaraux

3. Keynote 8 - Precision Agriculture in Sub- Africa: The Path Forward

Smallholder farmers contribute significantly to food security and rural livelihoods in Africa, but their yields are often low due to declining soil fertility, high input costs, and decreased availability of land for cultivation among other factors.  These challenges are exacerbated by climate change. Furthermore, soil physicochemical and biological properties are heterogeneous among farms within same or different agro-ecological zones, with obvious consequences for yields. This variability... K. 4. Remote Sensing: from Plot Towards Landscape Scales

The agricultural research sector is working to develop new technologies and decision support tools to sustainably increase food productivity, ensure global food security and decrease poverty. Precision Agriculture (PA) and specially Remote Sensing (RS) technologies have become more affordable in recent years. Cameras have become more compact and lighter, with improved spectral and spatial resolutions. The use of incoming light sensors allows for images to be automatically calibrated to surface... F. 5. Leaf-proximal Hyperspectral Data and Multivariate Modelling Approaches to Estimate Phosphorus and Potassium Content of Wheat Leaves

The assessment of plant nutrient status to provide sufficient fertilization for rapid and continuous uptake by plants has been based on visual diagnosis in the field, which is quick but demands a lot of experience and has low operability. Visible near-infrared spectroscopy (VNIS) has shown to be a quick, non-destructive, accurate, and cost-effective analytical method in precision agriculture. In this study, we assessed the potential of this technology to predict phosphorus and potassium content... Y. El-mejjaouy, B. Dumont, P. Vermeulen, A. Oukarroum, B. Mercatoris

6. Design and Development of a LoRa Communication System for Scalable Smart Irrigation Systems

Smart irrigation is a promising tool to optimize irrigation water use but is still faced with challenges related to usability and applicability attributed to several constraints such as high initial costs, complex user interface, poor connectivity, limited farm coverage, etc. This study aimed to solve some of these issues through the development and testing of a LoRa communication system using a Raspberry Pi 4, LoRa HAT concentrator, and Strega smart valve at the Makerere University Agricultural...
